Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Sounds like a good idea to me...

It's a variation on the old "Possession is nine tenths of the law" maxim. Drag in all the cash you can as quickly as you can and if there's a fuck up, let them try (TRY) and get some back off you.

Natural mutations that don't work tend to die out...err...naturally.

I suspect that Monsanto are only interested in maximising their profit margin, and any social/ecological concerns are an irrelevance to them.

Just a theory, mind.

Also, has anyone mentioned how GM modified seeds have to be bought every year?

Thats one of the biggest earners for Monsanto isn't it....the farmers (all farmers) will need to buy a yearly supply of seeds in the future.
What happens if Monsanto's own supply dries up? Everyone left with infertile strains of food crop.

We're all doomed I tell you.

Natural mutation is better described as EVOLUTION.

Don't fight it!

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Shin, presumably you don't know what natural mutation is going to happen down the line even with non-GM crops.

Shin Chan 7:36 Thu Jan 22
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
it is bad because you are not allowing for natural genetic mutation, something that happens all the time. If you "create" GM food you have NO idea what natural mutation will happen down the line.

There are enough freaks in the world without us adding our own little slice of "fuck up" to it.

In it's current state, and allowing for predictions, food production and distribution on the earth need management on a global, not national or global scale - and certainly not undertaken by a group that has it's own survival above all else.

Monsanto needs to survive and develop commercially for the exclusive benefit of it's owners as that it how it's success (evolutionary or otherwise) is gauged.

The purpose of the UN is - well SHOULD be - less commercial and it's "growth" should lie in direct proportion of it's constituent participants - in fact, once it's achieved it's aims it could, ostensibly, be disbanded.

Coffee 6:46 Thu Jan 22
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Piston, I agree. But is it right that Monsanto has already patented some or all of its GM seeds? If so, ownership has been established and it's desperately important that they and other commercial undertakings are not allowed to own the means of global food production.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
P.S. You made a noble typo.

Your not wrong and nor are you!

Barren of course.

Monsanto or the UN? Why does the world suddenly need ownership of the world's food resources? The answer is quite simple. They don't.

Coffee 6:26 Thu Jan 22
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Agree fully.

What's the difference between Monsanto and the UN? Well....

P.S. You made a noble typo.

PistonHammered 6:23 Thu Jan 22
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
UN, Monsanto? What's the difference?

Our ability to use natural food sources to grow and produce food have been a "god given right" and ANYbody given ownership of this would be wrong...............and I think unethical.

Monsanto are developing seeds that grow plants that produce baron seeds! You have to go back to them to get more!

This is just plain wrong.

Coffee 6:15 Thu Jan 22
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
That was roughly the point.

Thing is, someone has to own it and I'd rather it was the UN than the likes of Monsanto.

This is where an organisation such as the UN *must* have ownership and responsibility.

Fuck me Coffee, you jump out of the fire and into the frying pan with that logic.

I've got a better idea. How about NOBODY is allowed to OWN natural food products?

Coffee 6:02 Thu Jan 22

Agreed.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
It's more not being a fan of messing with nature I suppose, you also get into the activities of Monsanto and patenting round-up ready crops.

That's set against the benefits of helping to feed he planet.
Personal,y I don't have to make that choice so I prefer organic (local farms and Producers rather than the industrially produced). I'm not going to tell someone living on the breadline that the don't deserve a cheaper loaf of bread though.

Capitol

Why aren't you a fan of it?

Capitol Man 5:00 Thu Jan 22
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Higher yields, resistance to drought, grow more quickly, potential to add in. Ore positive traits.

I'm not a fan of it but there are some fairly decent arguments in support.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
I'd ask it the other way around, can anyone explain why genetically modified crops are good?

Apart from for the balance sheet of Monsanto et al obviously....

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
I'll put my oar in on JW and Coffee's side here.

It is a generally good rule of thumb that the more you fiddle with a genome beyond a certain point, the less overall value you get out of a crop.

I know farmers whose prize crops are tomatoes of a very old and basic variety. Unfortunately, you simply cannot purchase the seeds any more. And yes, the tomatoes are delicious, though maybe not so large and so red and the bush may not yield such a large crop.

Also, has anyone mentioned how GM modified seeds have to be bought every year? In my gardening experience, the resulting plant bears no fruit. Same as if you sprouted an supermarket avocado pip, the chances are the plant would be sterile.

So I believe the corporations responsible for much GM policy like Monsanto and Cargill are a prime example of capitalism gone wrong.
